The Future of Healthy Homes

Program #000221

1 AIA Health/Safety/Welfare Learning Unit

You are cordially invited to attend a FREE AIA approved CEU program presented by David Kirk of Velux Skylights. This presentation will be held here in our lumberyard classroom on Wednesday, March 2, beginnning at 12 Noon and concluding at 1 pm. Box lunches will be served. Please register by Tuesday, March 1.

Description:

A comprehensive, educational program to communicate how daylight and fresh air transmitted through skylights can contribute to an ideal indoor climate while accentuating modern design aesthetics. This program demonstrates that emerging daylighting technologies, supported by top design trend research, emphasize energy efficiency in residential spaces to create healthier, more comfortable living conditions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Daylight: Participants will be familiar with understanding the benefits of natural light in residential designs and its contribution to a healthy home. This section will cover significant research and provide data to prove skylights provide more light than vertical windows while contributing to greater overall energy efficiency.
  • Fresh Air: Participants will understand the strategic placement of skylights to optimize natural ventilation and create a healthy indoor climate. This section will provide further information on how venting skylights can benefit sustainable living in residential buildings.
  • Top Design Trends: Participants will discuss emerging trends in residential design, particularly those influenced and affected by daylight and fresh air. Emphasis will be placed on residential design trends that incorporate skylights, including modern flex space designs, open concept floorplans and borrowed light, designing post-pandemic, and other trends that contribute to energy efficiency and healthy homes.
  • Design Inspiration: Participants will view samples of residential skylight applications in photographs, 3-dimensional illustrations, and renderings. From these images, participants will gather information and insight on daylight amount and solar heat gain, as well as air flow throughout the Smith Residence, an Active House in St. Louis, MO, and other residential applications
