FAQ

Questions About Oriented Strand Board At Allegheny Millwork & Lumber

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is made from flakes of wood that are oriented in specific directions and bonded together with adhesives. The strands of wood are layered in cross-oriented patterns to enhance strength and durability.

How does OSB compare to plywood?

When choosing between plywood or OSB, the biggest considerations are appearance, cost, and moisture resistance. Plywood is generally chosen for its smoother appearance and superior moisture resistance, however, OSB is generally more affordable.

Is OSB environmentally friendly?

OSB uses smaller, fast-growing trees and overall, requires less wood to construct compared to plywood, making it environmentally friendly in many ways.

How is OSB plywood graded for moisture resistance?

OSB plywood is graded 1-4, OSB/1 being the least moisture resistant, and OSB/4 being the most moisture resistant.

Can OSB be painted or stained?

Yes! However, OSB should be properly sealed and primed after painting or staining.

How should plywood be treated or finished for different uses?

For exterior uses, OSB plywood should be waterproofed or painted to protect it against. elements

For interior uses, sanding, priming, painting, or staining is recommended to avoid the roughness and splinters of OSB plywood. This is also recommended if the plywood is being used for furniture or cabinetry.
